I was walking home last night from Trader Joe's and I passed Rebecca Hall on the street. Tall, caught in mid-laugh at a joke a friend must have told her, and unfussy, she looked stunning in a low key, but refined sort of way. Dressed in black dhoti pants, Doc Martin style boots, and a cropped leather jacket; in a word, she was breathtaking. I wanted to tell her how much I loved her in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", but I decided to revel in the moment of seeing such a fine actress and beautiful woman in my little neighborhood on what was a gray, blah Saturday.

A kiss is not just a kiss at the movies. It's Valentine's Day tomorrow and I couldn't stop thinking about my favorite screen kisses. I guess my criteria is not far off from what I want in real life: tender, passionate, and surprising. For many of us our first kiss was a movie kiss. I think mine was Vicki Vale and Batman in Tim Burton's "Batman", cheesy I know, but I'll never forget it. Kisses in movies seem more epic, urgent, and most of all, fantastical. We wish we could all be caught in the rain with some impossibly attractive counterpart in which we will say and do the right thing and the music will swell as our lips meet to a resoundingly perfect exclamation of amorous desire. But such is life and it's almost as good as the movies.

The mannish shapes and lightness in the clothes were excellent in Stefano Pilati's Spring collection, but the real draw of the Yves Saint Laurent show was Ms. Deneuve seated in the front row looking impossibly chic and dangerously French. Take notice of how the coat (plucked from the Fall YSL 07 collection) falls ever so slighty off her turtleneck covered shoulders. That is sex in a coat.

A prequel of sorts, Wes Anderson whets our appetite before his next cinematic feast for the eyes, "The Darjeeling Limited", with this simple short film about a man and a woman in a hotel room. I love the mustache on Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman has never been so commanding in her on screen sexuality. They play off each other really well although at time it feels like too much of a poured on pastiche and homage to an era of French cinema gone by. I could have easily seen Jean Louis-Tringnant and some pouty-lipped strumpet of the day playing the same roles and engaging in the same banal banter that climaxes in a quiet and sexy pause on a posh hotel balcony. Anderson's trademark wide angle lens, unrelenting esoteric pop music, and slow motion shots are there, but this feels new and more revealing for Anderson namely because of the film's overt but abstracting use of sex. Who knew eroticism and Wes Anderson would be uttered in the same breath?
